She sometimes gets knocked by uncharitable who think she's "too Victorian" to really get Tolstoy; however, if you compare the Volokhonsky/Pevear translation of Anna Karenina with my girl Connie's, you'll see that the V/K's owe her a pretty big debt. We're using the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation, but feel free to take up any of the available translations. There are essentially twelve English translations (or versions) of War and Peace to date, (if you count Bromfield's so-called "Disney Version" and Komroff's radical abridgement of the Garnett translation -- see my notes below.) As I have already alluded to, abridgements of the work are on the market and I cannot generally .. Not that any translation really could. It was translated by Max Hayward and Manya Harari, and lest I sound like I'm spitting in the eye of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, I loved it. Well, that was the first time I had really seriously looked into War and Peace at all, and as I poured over the four or five different versions of the novel on the shelf, I couldn't figure out which translation was the "best. It would seem that the only translation of War and Peace that an even mildly informed reader in 2013 would choose would be that by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. The War and Peace Reading Support Group begins on Monday, but we will start reading the Tolstoy this weekend. This enormous, 4-pound, 1,273-page Vintage Classics edition of War and Peace tipped the helmet. This new version by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky — who most recently, in 2007, gave us their War and Peace— won't change that. Zhivago is not a novel in the usual sense. For the Williamstown production, director Richard Nelson enlisted the help of celebrated translator team Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky to create a new English-language version. I've since read the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations of Anna Karenina and War and Peace, and have their translation of The Brothers Karamazov sitting on my to-be-read shelf.
